Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands on Sunday bettered the 10,000 metres world record by almost nine seconds.
The 1,500m and 10,000m world champion clocked 29 minutes 6.82 seconds in Hengelo, The Netherlands, bettering the mark of 29:17.45 from Ethiopian Almaz Ayana at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Helped by pacemakers early on and then the Wavelight technology at the side of the track, Hassan was half a minute faster than in her European record in October 2020 in the same stadium and confirmed her status as a top contender for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
“Wow, to run this world record here today in Hengelo is something I could only dream of,” she said.
“It’s the perfect confirmation of the hard work we’ve put in getting ready for Tokyo. I am so happy to share this record in front of my Dutch fans. I am so happy!”
