The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously elected Permanent Representative of Qatar to UN HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani to lead the Sixth Committee as Chairperson of the Legal Committee of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, which will kick off on September 14.
In a statement, Sheikha Alya expressed Qatar’s appreciation and gratitude to the member states for unanimously electing her to chair the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly’s 76th session.
She thanked the member states of Asia and the Pacific Group (APG) for recommending the candidacy of Qatar to chair the Sixth Committee, as well as all the geographical groups for their valuable support in this regard.
She stressed that Qatar was keen to run for the chairpersonship of the General Assembly’s Legal Committee, which deals with all legal issues. Qatar affirms firm belief in the rule of law, commitment to international law, its critical role in stabilising and strengthening international relations, and achieving the goals of the United Nations.
Sheikha Alya affirmed that she will work closely with the President of the General Assembly and his office, as well as the member states, on all matters related to the work of the committee. She will do her best to ensure that work is carried out in the contexts adopted in this committee, which of utmost significance to the international community.
She also pledged to build on what was previously achieved in the work of the Sixth Committee, and to consult and coordinate with Chairperson and Bureau of the Sixth Committee for the Assembly’s 76th session, in a way that achieves the goals of the member states. She expressed her anticipation to work and cooperate with General Assembly’s President and Bureau’s members, to accomplish the tasks assigned to the 76th session.
In accordance with the contexts established on the agenda of the General Assembly’s committees, Egypt, Lithuania and Spain were elected as Vice-Chairpersons of the Sixth Committee, and Costa Rica was elected as Rapporteur for the Committee.
The Legal Committee (Sixth Committee) is UN’s main committee that is concerned with international law and presented with draft international treaties and agreements, in addition to issues of great importance to the international community, including measures to combat terrorism, the rule of law, and other topics that represent a priority for the international community.
