Tightened virus control measures seem to be having an effect on Taiwan’s infection numbers, as the lowest number of new locally transmitted cases since mid-May was reported on Sunday.
The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Sunday announced 174 locally transmitted cases, one imported case and 24 related deaths.
It is the first time the daily case number dropped to under 200 since May 15, when Taiwan tightened measures to contain the coronavirus.
CECC chief Chen Shih-chung told a televised news conference that the Covid-19 situation is not worsening, as figures are dropping, but warned against slacking off when it comes to following the rules.
Chen added that more vaccine doses will be given to jurisdictions containing hotspots to help efficiently contain the virus.
Since the pandemic began, Taiwan, an island of 23.6 million people, has confirmed a total of 12,921 infections.
The death toll due to Covid-19 reached 437 on Sunday.
So far, Taiwan has obtained 2.11 million vaccine doses, and the number should reach 10 million by the end of August, officials said.
