Ali bin Hassan Al-Hammadi, secretary-general of the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), met with a high-level delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Sunday, which included Omar Odeh, Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation, Mohamed Abbas, Cooperation Coordinator, and Cherine Pollini, Head of the ICRC Mission in Qatar.
Dr. Fawzi Oussedik, Head of International Relations and International Humanitarian Law, and Adel Al-Baker, Director of the QRCS President’s Office, attended the meeting.
They discussed QRCS’ health and development operations, particularly in relation to the global campaign to ensure poor countries’ access to vaccines. This issue was given a lot of attention, especially in war zones like Yemen.
The talks focused on renewing bilateral logistical agreements in Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, and other countries. A new uniform channel was revealed to assist Movement partners, ensuring stronger communication with QRCS’ Afghanistan representation office and Doha headquarters.
The guests expressed gratitude to Qatar for its active humanitarian role and expressed interest in advancing relations in disaster management, given QRCS’ extensive experience in this field. They welcomed potential suggestions for consideration as well as facilitation of joint field work.
QRCS leaders were invited to the ICRC headquarters in Geneva to launch an annual strategic dialogue on what has been done and what needs to be done in the future. Al-Hammadi emphasised the ICRC’s commitment to serving humanity everywhere and praised the role of the organisation’s permanent office in Doha.
Odeh expressed his condolences for the tragic bombing of the QRC’s Gaza office. Then it was decided to start working on a draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) as a framework of cooperation to address armed conflict on a broader scale.
