Qatar has achieved another milestone in security and safety as the country ranked again the first in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and 29th globally in the Global Peace Index (GPI) for the year 2021.
Issued by the Institute of Economics and Peace in Australia, the 2021 report covered 163 countries. The report measures the state of peace across three domains: the level of Societal Safety and Security, the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict, and the degree of Militarization.
Since 2009, Qatar has been topping the MENA region in the GPI consecutively. Qatar has ranked ahead of many developed countries globally in the GPI as it scored high ranks in different quantitative and qualitative indicators of peacefulness.
The countries are ranked in the Index on a scale of 1-5 degrees and the most stable countries are those that achieve 1, while the least stable receive 5. This year Qatar scored 1.605 points with high ranks in many indicators such as level of criminality, terrorist activities, number of homicides and level of organized internal conflict.
Qatar ranked 15th globally in the domain of Societal Safety and Security that evaluates the level of harmony in nation with low crime rates, minimal terrorist activity and less violence.
The Global Peace Index is an attempt to measure the relative peacefulness of countries and regions. It is produced by the Institute for Economic and Peace in consultation with an international team of experts from institutes and research centers.
The GPI and other international indexes show that the state of security and safety enjoyed by Qatar as one of the safest and most secure countries is the result of efforts made by the Ministry of Interior to ensure achieving the best levels of security performance.
The Ministry’s efforts in combating crime and protecting lives and property in line with its vision and security strategy paid off.
It is worth noting that Qatar’s attainment of advanced positions globally and regionally in security and safety has been going on for several years. For example, Qatar ranked 25th globally in the Global Competitiveness Index for the year 2017-2018, which was issued by the World Economic Forum. Thanks to the diversity of Qatar’s economy, the development of its infrastructure, the openness and effectiveness of its labor market, and its tangible progress in terms of innovation and technology. All these indicators have a direct relationship to the level of security and safety enjoyed by the state.
Many international indices such as the Global Peace Index, the Nambio Index, the Police Services Index, and the Global Terrorism Index, have ranked Qatar highest in the Middle East and North Africa in terms of security and safety.
These global indicators measures among others the state of security and peace including the rates of major crimes, extent of safety measures and community partnership, quality of services provided to the public and the reach of security awareness in the community.
