A group of 21 al-Shabaab members were executed by firing squad after a regional Somali military court convicted them of membership in the insurgent group, officials told dpa on Sunday.
They were responsible for “killing scores of government officials, journalists, traditional elders and members of civil society groups,” Mohamud Abdi, a judge from Puntland state, told dpa by phone.
He said intelligence operatives with the group had been in Galkayo and Garowe to direct and mastermind targeted assassinations and suicide bombings.
The public execution represented the largest number of al-Shabaab members ever put to death in a single day. There was no word from the group.
Puntland security forces are fighting members of the group Islamic State, as well as al-Shabaab loyalists, in the region’s mountainous Bari province Separately, at least 27 people were killed on Sunday when al-Shabaab members launched a massive attack on Wisil district in central Somalia, local authorities told dpa.
The insurgents overran an army base belonging to Galmudug state security forces after a suicide car bombing. A three-hour firefight ensued, according to police officer Abdikarin Ahmed. Armed civilians joined in the fight against al-Shabaab.
Ahmed said 12 people, including members of the Galmudug regional forces and civilians died, as did 15 al-Shabaab fighters.
However, al-Shabaab on its radio Andalus claims to have 34 members of the Somali regional security forces from Galmudug.
