The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) affirmed that protecting the environment represents an important component of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Qatari Constitution, as they stress that protection of the environment represents a fundamental right of the Qatari citizens, a moral responsibility towards future generations, and a clear declaration of Qatar’s commitment to global trends aimed at achieving sustainable development.
The comment came in a speech by Head of Public Relations at the MME Abdullah Mohammed Al Falasi, at a ceremony held to launch the website of Al Reem Biosphere Reserve, in the presence of a number of officials and representatives of various authorities.
A movie, which gave a comprehensive overview of the reserve and the efforts to protect it against environmental damage, was also shown during the event.
Al Falasi said that Al Reem is one of the most important reserves in Qatar, with diligent work taking place to ensure the ecosystem is preserves. He noted that it is one of the 30 reserves in 10 countries that are under the umbrella of UNESCO biospheres.
He said that, within the framework of the administrative plan for Al Reem reserve, the Department of Natural Reserves, in cooperation with the Information Systems Department and the UNESCO Office in Doha, works on redefining the areas and formulating a plan to develop and apply the geographic information system.
He added that the reserve is one of the most advanced in the region in this regard.
Director of UNESCO Regional Office in Doha Anna Paolini praised Qatar’s efforts in protecting the reserves and launching a website dedicated to it.
