European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged people to get vaccinated against Covid-19 in light of the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus.
"We are concerned about the Delta variant. We see that the new Delta variant is much more transmissible than the other ones, and we see that infection rates are rising and we know that they will be rising,” she said on Friday during a visit to Lithuania.
But she said the "good news” was that the existing Covid-19 vaccines were effective against the more contagious Delta variant. The severity of the infection can be reduced through vaccination and hygiene measures, she said.
"I can only urge everybody who has not taken the opportunity to get vaccinated to do so. It is protecting yourself and protecting your environment,” von der Leyen said in Vilnius.
The so-called Delta variant of the coronavirus was first discovered in India. In the meantime, it is spreading extraordinarily fast in many countries.  It is certain that Delta is significantly more contagious than all other known variants. According to current knowledge, fully vaccinated people are well protected against a severe course of Covid-19, even if infected with the Delta variant.
