German tennis star Laura Siegemund has spent her first night in the Olympic village for the Tokyo Games and has admitted it is a shock with changes made amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"I’m surprised how spartan it is,” she told dpa on Wednesday. "It’s always spartan. But it’s almost a bit of a shallow atmosphere.
"I’m surprised with how little love it was made.”
Siegemund, 33, is sharing a flat with fellow compatriot tennis players Anna-Lena Friedsam and Mona Barthel.
Nails can still be seen in the walls which have "no wallpaper at all,” said Siegemund, while in the village "there isn’t a bit of grass, they have laid a green outdoor carpet.” Fed Cup coach Rainer Schuettler commented the facilities had to be accepted as they were. "We’re at the Olympics, how amazing is that in these times.”
