Germany claimed a record-extending 14th gold medal in the Olympic dressage team event on Tuesday at the Tokyo Games, with veteran Isabelle Werth now on seven career golds overall.
Werth, 52 teamed up with Dorothee Schneider and Jessica von Bredow-Werndl for a comprehensive victory with 8,178 points.
The American team took silver on 7,749 and the 2016 winners Britain earned bronze on 7,723 points.
"All three were in outstanding form, simply world class,” German equestrian team chief Dennis Peiler said. "You shouldn’t forget how much pressure was on them. The expectations are huge in dressage.
Germany have completely dominated the team event with nine golds in the last 10 Olympic competitions and 14 from 21 overall.
It was Germany’s second gold at the Tokyo Games, after canoe slalom athlete Ricarda Funk had delivered the first one earlier Tuesday.
More dressage gold looms Wednesday in the individual event, and if Werth wins it she will draw level with former canoe paddler Birgit Fischer as the most successful German Olympian with eight gold and four silver.
"Let’s see what happens,” Werth said. "We will try to ride as good as we can. And then we will fight.”
