President of the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) Mohammed Ali Al Mannai on Monday led a Qatari delegation from the CRA and Qatar Post (Q-Post) to the opening ceremony of the 27th Universal Postal Congress.
The Congress is organised by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The Congress gathers plenipotentiaries from the UPU’s member countries to adopt the new World Postal Strategy – a roadmap for the UPU new work cycle (a four-year period) commencing in 2022.
The Congress will also decide on new rules and set policies on the international exchange of postal items. Moreover, the member countries will elect the next UPU director-general and deputy director-general and decide on the membership of the UPU’s Council of Administration and Postal Operations Council for the 2021-2024 period.
On the sidelines of the Congress, Mannai will attend the Ministerial Conference, which will be held on August 10, 2021 (today). During the Conference, government decision-makers and the heads of the United Nations (UN) agencies and other international organisations will evaluate the transformations resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and discuss the needed changes to bring a sustainable future.
He said, “We ensured to participate in the 27th Universal Postal Congress as it is an opportunity to strengthen relations and exchange experiences with the UPU, regulatory bodies and postal sector players around the world.
“This is in addition to discussing policy, strategy and development issues regarding the postal sector and contributing to shaping the future of the global postal sector, which have a direct effect on the development of the postal sector in Qatar and other local sectors associated with postal services.”
The Congress is held every four years and it is the supreme authority of the UPU. The UPU is a United Nations specialised agency and one of the world’s oldest international organisations. The UPU is the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players and has 192 member countries. Qatar is a member of the UPU since 1969.
