Catching a fish, trudging through a field of heather, gazing thoughtfully into the distance: Photos and videos released by the Kremlin on Sunday of Vladimir Putin on vacation in southern Siberia showed off the Russian president’s more rugged side.
State television on Sunday showed more than 10 minutes of footage provided by the Kremlin’s press office of the vacation that took place in early September. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, a close friend of Putin’s, also tagged along on the trip for a second time.
In the video, the director of a nature reserve is shown explaining to Putin that there are some 600 bears living in the area. That’s “substantial,” responds the Russian president.
The 68-year-old also seems impressed by a pack of red deer he observes in the taiga. If they were to compete in the Olympics, jokes Putin, no one could match them. He is later seen getting comfortable in a tent for the night.
Putin has attracted attention in the past for his staged vacation photos, with picture of him riding bare-chested on a horse or presenting a huge fish he allegedly caught part of an the image that he attempts to craft of himself as a rugged outdoorsman.
