Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), represented by the District Cooling Services Department, visited the Lusail West Cooling plant that provides the Lusail World Cup Stadium and the adjacent area with the necessary cooling capacity for operation, within the framework of the tasks of the department in monitoring the compliance of cooling stations with the approved specifications and standards.
The visit aimed to determine the stations readiness and the extent of the operating systems commitment to implementing the instructions contained in the district cooling code and the key performance indicators.
Lusail City extends over an area of 38sq km, most of which is provided with district cooling services, with a total cooling capacity expected to reach 500,000 tonnes when its areas and islands are completed.
Lusail is a smart city with a modern character that adopts the best and latest smart solutions in the field of sustainable technologies and energy-saving systems. The city’s adoption of the district cooling system in adapting all the buildings and facilities in them comes out of the importance of this system as it represents the most appropriate solution for modern and sustainable cities because of its importance in promoting a sustainable economy while keeping pace with urban development, protecting the environment and obtaining the highest levels of reliability in operation at the same time.
The West Lusail station was commissioned last July to supply to meet the requirements of Lusail Stadium, which is the largest stadium for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, along with the adjacent buildings. The station has a cooling capacity of 30,000 tonnes of water cooling through an integrated network. The plant has been designed, implemented and operated in accordance with the specifications of the district cooling code and the key performance indicators published by Kahramaa.
The new station in Lusail City works through an integrated control and monitoring system that is interconnected with the rest of the operating and future stations to form with each other a coordinated system that guarantees high energy performance, continuity and reliability that ensures the air conditioning of all buildings without interruption and reduces maintenance and operating costs. Also, the plant is designed to operate with treated wastewater through an additional purification plant that raises the quality of the treated water.
This contributes to the provision of large quantities of desalinated water suitable for drinking while achieving the sustainability of water resources and enhancing the water security of the country.
Kahramaa has urged all developers and investors to adopt the district cooling system in their projects, as it is the most energy efficient system, as it saves approximately 40% of electricity and approximately 98% of potable water in the case of using treated water compared to With conventional cooling system. This system is also considered one of the most energy systems that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which contributes to reducing Qatar’s carbon footprint.
The District Cooling Services Department at Kahramaa works with all district cooling service providers in Qatar to improve the approved systems to ensure efficient use of resources and achieve the desired benefits for the state and society.
