The Guinness Book of World Records has recognised a dwarf cow, raised by a Bangladeshi farm, as the shortest cow in the world, farm officials said on Tuesday.
"We were communicated the recognition through an e-mail by the Guinness authorities on Monday night,” Kazi Abu Sufian, chief executive officer of Shikor Agro Limited, told dpa by phone.
He said a certificate and a photograph of the miniature Bhutti cow have also been uploaded to the website of the Guinness Book of World Records, more than a month after the cow died.
"The shortest cow ever is Rani (Bangladesh), who measured 50.80 cm ... as verified in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 4 July 2021,” reads the announcement posted on the Guinness website.
Thousands of people flocked to see the cow, owned by Sufian, at the Shikor Agro Limited in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, despite a nationwide anti-coronavirus shutdown after the farm made the claim in early July that the tiny bovine is the shortest cow in the world.
The cow had earned fame overnight and her photographs went viral on social media platforms.
At one point, the farm shut its doors to the crowds over the 23-month-old cow’s safety amid the alarming surge in coronavirus infections at that time.
But, Rani, a Bhutti Boxer breed, suddenly died of food poisoning on August 19 despite the veterinary officials trying their level best to save her, said the farm’s manager, Tanvir Hasan.
Rani was at least 10 centimetres shorter than Manikyam, the Vechur cow from India that held the previous record of being the smallest bovine.
Manikyam’s height is 61.1 centimetres, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
