The flame for the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing was lit on Monday in ancient Olympia in Greece in a ceremony restricted to only a few specially invited guests amid the coronavirus pandemic.
A concave focussing light from the sun will ignite the flame in a traditional ceremony but the usual lengthy torch relay will also not take place due to pandemic concerns.
Instead only three runners will briefly carry the flame to the Acropolis in Athens where it will remain overnight.
The handover to Chinese organizers of the Games takes place Tuesday in the Panathenaic Stadium, a second-century arena used in both the 1896 and 2004 Games.
