Impressive Qatar continued their march in the Asian Cup with a gritty 1-0 win over Iraq in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday to set up a quarter-final meeting with South Korea.
Bassam al Rawi's direct free kick just after the hour was a rare moment of quality in a frantic encounter in Abu Dhabi and was worthy of winning the game for the 2022 World Cup hosts.
Qatar will return to action, again in the UAE capital, on Friday against two-time champions South Korea, who are chasing a first title since 1960.
Yet to concede a goal in the 2019 tournament, Qatar have not previously been beyond the tournament’s last eight.
Earlier in Dubai, Kim Jin-su’s extra-time header took South Korea past a stubborn Bahrain as Paulo Bento's side sealed a 2-1 win.
The goal, scored in stoppage time of the first period of extra time, earned Korea a barely-deserved win after Bahrain's Mohamed al Romaihi had earlier cancelled out Hwang Hee-chan's opener to take the game beyond 90 minutes.
Bento’s side will now face either Qatar in the last eight on Friday as the Koreans seek to win the title for the first time since 1960.
