THree people were reported killed and dozens others injured in fresh anti-military protests in Sudan on Saturday.
Two protesters were killed on Saturday from gunshots and one from a tear gas canister in Khartoum and its twin city of Omdurman, Al Jazeera said quoting the Sudan Doctors Committee.
Earlier, witnesses said security forces had fired tear gas to disperse protesters in the capital, Khartoum, and its twin city of Omdurman. Despite disruption of communication networks, demonstrations also broke out in the city of Wad Madani, south of Khartoum, it added
Protesters once again took to the streets in response to last month’s military takeover and the army commander’s unilateral decision to appoint a new Sovereign Council on Thursday. Sudan’s military ruler, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has appointed himself chairman of the council. A number of countries and organizations have expressed dismay at al-Burhan’s actions, saying they violate the Constitutional Declaration, drawn up after the removal of autocratic leader Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
Al-Burhan, who had previously led a transitional government with now-ousted prime minister Abdullah Hamduk, dissolved the government and imposed a state of emergency on October 25. It was not immediately clear how many people participated in Saturday’s protests, which were called for by the Sudanese Professsionals Association and took place in Omdurman, the capital Khartoum and other cities. Since the coup, the internet and many telephone lines have been largely blocked in Sudan.
The Al Jazeera news channel reported that tear gas had been used to disperse crowds and that authorities had blocked bridges in Khartoum to halt protest action, including the burning of tyres.
Footage showed demonstrators holding the Sudanese flag and calling for the return of civilian rule.Sudan has seen repeated pro-democracy protests in the past month, backed by calls from around the world for the restoration of the civil government.
