Athens Smugglers succeeded in bringing dozens of migrants from Turkey to Cyprus on Monday, thus giving them access to the EU.
Police patrols discovered 31 Syrian men who had arrived on the south of the island from the Turkish Cypriot north. They were taken to a reception centre.
Smugglers repeatedly bring refugees from the Turkish coast, about 70 kilometres away. They first head to the north of the third largest Mediterranean island. The authorities of the EU republic of Cyprus, which only control the southern part of the island, cannot do anything about this.
The north of Cyprus is occupied by Turkish troops and does not allow checks on the sea between Turkey and northern Cyprus. (dpa)
