For Pakistanis, Qatar is like a second home as it is the best place to live in and work in the Middle East, says Malik Nawar Khan Wazir, a second generation expatriate from the South Asian country.
"My father came to Qatar in 1980 and served the country to the best of his abilities. He also engaged in community welfare activities and helped his compatriots in every way. I am now living here along with my two brothers and following in the footsteps of my father, who has returned to Pakistan and lives there,” said Wazir, who is the chairman of Qatar Pushtun Community.
"We have found that Qatar offers the best working environment to expatriates who have made fortunes with their hard work while enjoying an excellent standard of living,” he added.
Pakistanis, mostly unskilled workers, started to arrive in Qatar in early fifties and contributed significantly to the development of Qatar. Now their third generation is working and living in the country.
"Qatar may be one of the world’s smallest countries but it has surprised everyone with its rapid growth in the last two decades in all domains including education, sports, energy, IT, construction, business and tourism sectors,” he noted, while paying tribute to the visionary Qatari leadership.
Qatar, he observed, has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world and continues to attract foreign professionals to work in its tax-free environment.
Describing the role of Pakistani community in the development of Qatar, Wazir said, "The Qatari authorities have acknowledged on a number of occasions the services rendered by Pakistani community in the development of Qatar. Earlier, our compatriots were engaged in manual labour in Qatar and now over 80 percent of heavy equipment is owned by Pakistanis, which is being used in the construction industry.
"We have our own community schools in Qatar where our kids are getting best education at affordable fees. Best health facilities in the country are available to national and expatriates alike. Competent government departments have ensured that Pakistani workers are well taken care of like others. In short, we are fully satisfied with the treatment of the host country and thoroughly enjoying the international-level facilities available to us,” noted Wazir.
Qatar is well placed to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 in an impeccable manner due to its experience of hosting prestigious sports events in the past. "This is the first time the world’s biggest football tournament will be hosted in the Middle East. State-of-the-art stadiums, budget accommodation options, luxurious hotels and other infrastructure are almost complete and the country is looking forward to welcome guests from all over the world next year,” said Wazir.
While extending good wishes to the 16 teams from across the Arab world participating in the Fifa Arab Cup 2021, Wazir noted that the event will provide an opportunity to Qatar to gauge and fine-tune its preparation for the bigger event to be held in 2022.
