Renowned Italian photographer Francesca Pompei has said she’s deeply inspired by the architecture and landscape of Doha, especially its avant-garde architectures designed by international names such as Jean Nouvel, Rem Koolhaas, Aratalsozaki, and Leoh Ming Pei.
Talking exclusively to Qatar Tribune recently during the official opening of ‘Sharada’ exhibition of her photographs at the Qatar National Library, which is open to the public until January 12, she said, “When we encounter a piece of architecture, the experience begins before we enter the space, thanks to a visual context which incorporates a sort of animated geometry and a tenuous relationship between light and dark, so that the ingredients can be seen in a moving way, in a dynamic and evocative energy.”
Depicting the Ceremonial Court in Education City, Doha got her award last October in the ‘New Buildings’ category at the ‘Trieste Photo Days’.
She said, “What is most amazing is the grandeur of these hyper-modern sites which stand out from a silent and solitary perspective, in a space in between suspended in the known city and the other side.
“An enigmatic landscape evoking a metaphysical dimension, invites to a journey through a fairy fascination like The Thousand and One Nights.”
The Sharada exhibition at QNL’s Main Plaza has been organised by the embassy of Italy in Qatar in collaboration with Qatar National Library (QNL).
Ambassador of Italy to Qatar Alessandro Prunas said the exhibition is part of the celebrations of the ‘Italian Contemporary Art Day’ promoted by Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Italian Association of Contemporary Art Museums.
The envoy thanked the Qatar National Library for its support and cooperation in organising the exhibition. He said he was particularly proud of having Francesca Pompei’s works which create a clear connection between Italy and Qatar “as they show Doha’s iconic architectural sights from the eyes of an Italian artist”.
