Sport Accelerator, the first sports economic hub of its kind in Qatar and the Middle East, was launched at the Aspire Zone Foundation on Thursday (December 16, 2021) in the presence of a number of officials and dignitaries.
On the sidelines of the opening, a memorandum of understanding ‘MOU’ was signed between the Sport Accelerator and the Qatar Free Zones Authority, which aims to diversify economy and support the sustainable development goals of Qatar. The MOU was signed by Ali Abdullah Al Mutawa, President of Sport Accelerator, and Fahad Zainal, A-Chief Zones Operating Officer, Chief Corporate Support Officer.
Sport Accelerator (SA) is a dedicated sector within Aspire Zone Foundation established to leverage Qatar’s status as a global sports hub by creating new business opportunities for the private sector, attracting foreign investment and developing Qatari entrepreneurs. Through these activities, the SA will increase the share of the sports sector in Qatar’s economy, in support of Qatar National Vision 2030.
The Sport Accelerator will include companies within the sports value chain from across the whole world for low rent rate that is considered the lowest in the market.
Commenting on the event, Azzam Al Mannai, CEO, The Sport Accelerator, said: “We are pleased to announce the opening of Sport Accelerator building, which represents a unique launch of cooperation between sports and economic entities in the country and the world, which will enhance the country’s position as a regional center for sports business.
“We take this opportunity to extend our thanks for the support of Aspire Zone Foundation for the success of The Sport Accelerator, headed by Mr. Mohammed Khalifa Al Suwaidi, CEO of Aspire Zone Foundation, and Mr. Ali Abdulla Al Mutawaa, Committee Chairman of the Sport Accelerator and we thank our partners: Qatar Financial Center (QFC), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Qatar Development Bank , Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (2022), Sports City Enterprise and Qatar Free Zones Authority.”
Elaborating on the idea and role of Sport Accelerator, Al Mannai said: “When it comes to the economics of it, the main purpose of Sport Accelerator is to create an ecosystem where we guarantee international sport companies, who come to Qatar to do business, economical value beyond the events of their purpose, so today we have inaugurated this building which is 8,173qm in area and we have two floors with 85 offices and already we have 45 offices occupied from the sports sector from North America, Europe, Asia, the Arab world as well as GCC, and also local Qatar companies.
“In partnership with Qatar Financial Centre we managed to secure Free Zone license for this building which allows international firms to come to Qatar and operarte without the need of any local partner having 100% acquisition for these companies and our part comes in ensuring smoothness for start ups when it comes to regulatory and all te communications for these companies. We operate 24x7 and provide everything from electricity to communications, large parking spaces to customised services for our clients and partners.
“Considering the challenges that everyone has faced because of the Covid pandemic, we have managed to succeed our goals by ensuring that nothing is interrupted, until now we have 75% occupied and I see the remaining 25% being taken up in the days ahead Inshaallah,” he added.
On which companies can be at the Sport Accelerator, “Any company that has sport in its dna will be more than welcome to establish a license with us and operate from day one. Basically, our role is to create the sports business environment and we will be the matchmaker between these companies and local companies, regularatories, federations and others, fast-tracking opportunities for the sport sector while being in the sport neighbourhood.”
