Marking the start of the New Year, Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) opened the first phase of the Lusail Tram for the public on Saturday.
The opening of the first phase including the preview service of six stations on the Orange Line, which are Marina, Marina Promenade, Yacht Club, Esplanade, Energy City South and Legtaifiya, saw many people board the tram for the first time at the Legtaifiya station.
Legtaifiya station, which is a combined Tram and Doha Metro station, is currently the boarding station for all trams to Lusail City.
Minister of Transport HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti and Minister of Municipality HE Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, who is also the Managing Director and CEO of Qatar Rail, inspected the commencement of operations of the first phase of Lusail Tram.
Speaking on the occasion, Sulaiti said, “Running the Lusail Tram is in step with ministry’s plans for providing a sustainable, multimodal, eco-friendly public transit using latest world technology systems, aiming at providing safe, reliable, and high-quality services for all beneficiaries.”
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the inaugural event, an official of Qatar Rail said, “From today, Lusail Tram has begun covering areas that are inhabited by people in the Lusail City through six underground Orange Line stations. The rest of the stations will open as the city grows. Lusail Tram would run seven days a week with an interval of five minutes.”
When the service becomes fully operational, the official said, the public will be able to use the tram to reach all parts of Lusail City and connect to the Metro Network via Legtaifiya and Lusail stations.
Once fully operational, the official said, “The Lusail Tram network will be 28 km long comprising four lines and 25 stations where two stations will connect with the Metro network. Out of the 25 stations, 10 stations will be underground and the rest of the 15 stations will be on the ground level. The stations will connect various government offices, residential towers, leisure and sports facilities, avenues, marinas and other major attractions across Lusail City.”
As part of Qatar Rail’s efforts to provide an integrated transportation experience between all its networks, existing Doha Metro Travel Cards will allow customers to seamlessly move throughout the Metro and Tram networks, as well as provide access to our metroexpress and metrolink services.
