Athens: Temperatures in Greece plummeted during the weekend, with heavy snowfall leading to school closures in some areas.
Schools in Athens and other affected areas will not open on Monday and Tuesday as further snow is expected at the start of the week, weather forecasters said.
Islands popular among tourists such as Crete, Mykonos and Maxos have already recorded snowfall, an unusual event. Colder weather and freezing temperatures are relatively common in northern Greece but, further south, where snow is rare, there were traffic jams.
Many homes in southern Greece are ill-equipped for such cold weather and cities opened warm public buildings to the homeless and those without enough heating. (dpa)
