Olympic champion Alexander Zverev is proud to represent Germany in the upcoming Davis Cup tie in Brazil and hopes to win the tennis team event one day.
World number three Zverev is back in the team for the first time since 2019 for the March 4 and 5 tie in Rio de Janeiro, with the winner advancing to the group stage of the Davis Cup finals.
Zverev was picked after an early exit at last week’s Acapulco tournament where he was disqualified after hitting his racket against the umpire’s chair several times after a doubles match.
“It is always important for me to play for my home country and I am proud to represent Germany,” he said in an interview with the nation’s tennis federation DTB published on Tuesday.
“Together with the team I have the big aim to win the Davis Cup one day,” he added.
He said the team has a lot of potential but also warned that “we must be aware that we have to be at our best to reach the group stage.” Germany have won the Davis Cup three times, the last success dating back to 1993.
Zverev, whose parents are from Russia, also called for peace in reference to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and said “sport and the Davis Cup can send a signal for peaceful coexistence in the world.”
