Tehran: Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) naval units detained a foreign oil tanker in the Persian Gulf on Sunday for smuggling fuel, the second time they’ve taken such an action in recent weeks.
The tanker was illegally transporting more than 200,000 litres of oil, the IRGC said from the southern Iranian province of Bushehr. The vessel’s eight crew members have been temporarily detained, according to the Fars news agency.
It was initially unclear under which flag the oil tanker was sailing.
Two weeks ago, IRGC sea units from the neighbouring province of Hormozgan detained a foreign oil tanker for smuggling more than 220,000 litres of fuel, provisionally detaining its 11 crew members. No details regarding their whereabouts have been released so far. (dpa) -
