Four people, including an Austrian tourist, were killed when a bridge loaded with traffic collapsed in the central Philippines, causing vehicles to plunge into a river, police said on Thursday.
A further 17 people were injured in the accident, which occurred on Wednesday in Loay town in Bohol province.
The accident happened when about a dozen vehicles were crossing the bridge. An initial investigation showed that one of the vehicles involved was a lorry carrying gravel and sand to be used for the construction of the new bridge.
Bohol provincial Governor Arthur Yap said traffic stalled on the bridge and the truck was among those vehicles stuck in the middle before the collapse.
“The bridge is only for flowing traffic,” he said. “But the traffic became stationary and there were cargo vehicles there. And the bridge could not take the weight and that is the reason why it collapsed.”
