Euro 2024 in Germany will open in Munich and the final will be played in Berlin, the executive committee of the ruling body UEFA decided on Tuesday.
UEFA said that the 24-team tournament will open June 14, 2024 in Munich’s arena and Berlin’s Olympic Stadium will host the title match a month later on July 14.
It is the same arrangement as at the 2006 World Cup where Munich also hosted the opener and Berlin the final.
The tournament will be staged in 10 German cities, and UEFA said they would be divided into three clusters: North/North-East (Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig), West (Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Cologne) and South (Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart).
Matches in each group will be limited to two clusters, "which will reduce travel distances for teams and fans between the host cities, and favours team delegations travelling by train or bus from their base camps to the match venues during the group stage.” The group draw is scheduled for December 2023 in Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie concert house and the international media centre will be in Leipzig.
Germany beat Turkey for the rights to host the continental tournament in a 2018 vote. West Germany were hosts of Euro 1988.
