China and Russia flew bombers over waters near Japan on Tuesday, in what the US State Department called a demonstration of Beijing’s “no limits” partnership with Moscow.
China’s Defence Ministry confirmed it had conducted a “joint aerial strategic patrol” over the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean in accordance with Moscow and Beijing’s annual military cooperation plan.
Japan’s Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi said the bombers were flying from morning to afternoon and the move appeared to be “an act of demonstration” during the Tokyo Quad meeting between the US president and the prime ministers of Japan, Australia and India.
Kishi said Beijing’s joint move with Russia amid its aggression in Ukraine would “raise the level of provocation,” Japanese news agency Kyodo reported.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said the exercise was likely planned in advance by both countries.
“Beijing’s decision to cooperate with Moscow in this way amid Russia’s further invasion of Ukraine and the Kremlin’s dangerous nuclear rhetoric demonstrates the quote/unquote ‘no limits’ partnerships that they talked about in their joint communique is quite alive and well,” Price said.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Chinese and Russian warplanes entered Seoul’s air defence identification zone without notice but did not violate South Korean territorial airspace.
