Ever since its inception in 2018, Barzan Holdings has been actively engaged in helping revolutionise Qatar’s defence and security sectors. The strategy that Barzan has adopted serves the Qatari defence industry and promotes the country’s diplomatic and military objectives. Accordingly, Barzan has always been at the first place in line when it comes to not only in participating but also sponsoring major international exhibitions on homeland security, such as Milipol.
Abdullah bin Hassan Al-Khater, vice president and chief strategic procurement officer at Barzan Holdings, stressed the importance of the 14th session of Milipol Qatar 2022 exhibition and considered it an opportunity for the company to promote its products, regionally and internationally. "We have participated in the DCEI in London in 2021 and DCEI Japan in 2019, and we always look forward to being part of other defence and security exhibitions in the future. Now, we are the primary sponsor of a strategic partner for Milipol and DIMDEX. And we hope, over the years, Barzan will be seen as a strategic partner globally as well. Barzan Holdings is a company that is fully owned by the Ministry of Defence of Qatar and we are proudly the strategic partner of Millipol for the second time, representing 11 firms, not only displaying various solutions to the need of Qatar but also open to the international market in the field of the security and defense,” he said.
He pointed out that several MoUs were signed during the exhibition in technological, academic and research fields. The main objective of Barzan Holdings is to localize military industries, especially the production of ammunition and light weapons, and it has achieved great success in localising some products and supplying them to armed forces, particularly communications systems and unmanned aerial vehicles, he said.
Al Khater said that Qatar was previously dependent on foreign companies for the supply of military equipment, but the current objective is to localise military industries through the manufacturing of some equipment and light weapons in Qatar. "As Qatar’s commercial gateway for the defence industry, Barzan Holdings has been focused on empowering the country’s armed forces since its establishment. This has mainly been achieved through high-value procurement contracts that meet the nation’s defence requirements, as well as partnerships with leading global firms and organisations to advance research efforts and the development of innovative security technologies in the defence and maritime industries,” he noted.
Speaking of the latest technological innovations, Al Khater noted that Barzan Holdings has expanded its local partnerships to include educational alliances that enhance local knowledge and technology transfer in the defence and security sectors and said that research and development have been at the core of Barzan Holdings’ mission.
Through its growing collaboration with specialised defence and security firms around the world, Barzan Holdings is helping Qatar advance its R&D capabilities in a bid to facilitate the development of local innovative technologies and provide a secure future for Qatar and its allies. "When we are discussing homeland security, it is no longer about machine guns and ammunition and such. Now, there is an evolution, I would say, when it comes to homeland security. Cyber security, anti-drone systems, governments switching to e-governments… these are the new additional aspects we are paying attention to,” he explained
The Company’s portfolio consists of direct investments, early-stage venture capital investments, indirect investments, as well as joint ventures that benefit Qatar through the creation of new technologies and acquisition of intellectual property.
"Barzan Holdings’ investments extend beyond military industries to include the health sector. For instance, thanks to its joint venture with Aspen Medical Australia through Edraq Healthcare Solutions, Barzan Holdings provides innovative and world-class healthcare solutions to stakeholders in Qatar, including the Qatar Armed Forces,” he added.
