Cairo An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced a man to death by hanging after convicting him of fatally stabbing a Christian cleric two months ago, legal sources said.
On April 7, the 56-year-old Coptic cleric was attacked by a knife-wielding man while walking on a seaside promenade in the Egyptian Mediterranean city of Alexandria. He died after being transferred to a local hospital.
The victim was identified as Arsanios Wadid, the priest of the Church of the Virgin Mary and Mar Boulos in Alexandria.
Police arrested a 60-year-old suspect, whom prosecutors accused of committing a premeditated murder and embracing the ideology of terrorist groups. On Saturday, a criminal court in Alexandria unanimously handed the death sentence to the defendant, the sources added. (dpa)
