The Education Above All Foundation (EAA) and the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science facilitated a national dialogue on key priorities for education in Qatar on June 15 and 16. As a result, the participants developed a series of brief recommendations that will be presented to the General Secretariat of Transforming Education Summit during the dedicated pre-summit in Paris and the main conference in New York, planned for September 2022.
Over 50 stakeholders, including ministries, Qatar’s governmental and non-governmental entities, academic institutions, private companies, local and international organisations, as well as teachers, parents, students and youth, gathered at the College of Islamic Studies of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) for two days of discussions.
EAA hosted three panel discussions, covering 21st-century education transformations and goals, sustainable public financing and inclusive, equitable, safe and healthy schools. EAA also led sessions on the role of education in sustainable development, as well as the importance of higher education in fostering new skills for the job market.
EAA’s Director of Operations Arwa Mosaed delivered the closing statement, which encompassed recommendations and proposals elaborated during workshops and consultations that will be used to develop a comprehensive report on Qatar’s educational transformation and development.
Her statement mentioned the productive collaboration between local and international participants and emphasised the importance of holding consultations every year: “New ideas that emerged through creative cooperation, comprehensive thinking, and commitment towards results-oriented action are fundamental for the progress and achievement of our common educational goals,” she added.
Several public sessions were held as part of the National Consultation, giving an additional platform to a variety of stakeholders, including ministries, the Statistics Authority and Qatar Foundation, parents of students and children, the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), Oreedoo and Qatar Museums. Aimed at identifying priorities and setting goals beyond 2030, public sessions covered educational transformation in Qatar and the post-Covid recovery of the education sector. Participants also discussed the benchmarks and targets of national education and noted the digitalisation of the sector as the most significant recent trend.
The summit was attended by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Social Development and Family, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Labour, the General Administration of Endowments, the Statistics Authority, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Hamad Medical Hospital, Sidra Medical and Research Centre, Doha University of Science and Technology, Qatar National Library, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Teach for Qatar Foundation, Qatar Foundation / World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), Qatar University, Community College of Qatar, Silatech, Qatar Finance and Business Academy, Shura Council members, Qatar Museums, Ooredoo, Qatar National Bank, Qatar Airways, and business incubators: Qatar Science and Technology Park and Qatar Green Building Council.
