The India U-16 basketball team clinched the 5th place that is the highest final standing by any Indian team at the FIBA U16 Men''s Asian Championship.
This was the fourth time Indian U-16 boys'' basketball team participated in the FIBA U16 Asian Championship.
India was placed in a group with Australia, and hosts Qatar. The Indian team finished second place in the group stage where they beat Bahrain (80-41) and Qatar (77-51). They then beat Indonesia in pre-quarterfinals (97-53) and qualified for their first-ever quarter-finals for the South Asian country in the FIBA U-16 Asian Championship 2022.
India lost to Japan 84-91 in the last eight. They put up a valiant effort against a formidable Japan.
Later, India won an intense overtime clash over Iran (The No.1 ranked team in Asia) in the Classification Game (5-8 Place) by five points (83-78).
India beat Korea U-16 team for first time in the Asian Championship to claim the 5th spot in Asia which is their best performance in decades.
Dr. K Govindaraj, MLC & President, Basketball Federation of India (BFI) was extremely happy and delighted with performance of the Indian U-16 boys'' basketball team. "I congratulate the head coach, support staff and the players who have put their sincere efforts for making history by advancing to the quarter-finals for their best U16 Asian Championship performance ever," he said.
Dr. K Govindaraj, MLC & President, BFI, has also announced a cash prize of Rs.10,00,000 for the Indian U-16 men''s basketball team for clinching the 5th spot in the FIBA U-16 Asian Championship 2022 held in Doha, Qatar from 12th – 19th June 2022.
