There are procedures parents must know for their new-born babies to avoid exposing them to different diseases. For children, there are many common diseases among them, such as allergies, colds, asthma, and bulimia.
Studies and research have shown that 20% of children in Qatar have asthma due to the dusty atmosphere which most of the Gulf region also suffers from. Due to this, physicians always advise that newborns not to be exposed to dust or moisture during the summer because it is a major cause for asthma.
Doctors urge mother to breastfeed their children instead of powder milk as it boosts the baby’s immunity and prevents many diseases.
Qatar Tribune made an interview with Dr. Marah al Deeb, Pediatrician at the new Al Emadi Hospital (North) who answered questions about healthy life for newborns and gave some beneficial instructions for parents.
What are the most common diseases among children?
The most common and prevalent diseases in Qatar are respiratory diseases and viral diseases which become widespread in winter season. There are also different types of common allergies that are spread among children especially in this dusty and moist climate.. Tonsillitis infections are also widespread among children and pharyngitis, light inflammation of the intestines and sometimes there are few advanced cases.
What is the percentage of children with asthma?
I think up to 20% of children are suffering from asthma and this is a large percentage, the climate is the main factor and cause of asthma.
What are the precautions to prevent asthma for children?
Preventing children from respiratory diseases is very important because it is very serious, children must be avoided from crowded places, especially where there are others suffering illnesses because that helps transferring diseases. It is also preferred for children to wear dust masks and respirators when being in open spaces. Children must also be avoided going suddenly from a very hot climate to a very cold one when entering air-conditioned buildings as this may cause asthma and other diseases. Overall, children must be well vaccinated to avoid diseases especially in season and climate change.
What is the cause of the high rate of obesity in children?
Genetic factors are one of the main causes of the spread of obesity among children and we do monitoring for babies directly after birth to gradually monitor and measure the obesity in the baby according to the age of the child. Accordingly, we issue a diet suitable for the child to avoid obesity.
What are the procedures for newborns at Emadi Hospital?
Yes, immediately after the baby is born, he is taken to a special room which is equipped for conducting a comprehensive examination to measure height and weight and follow up his condition. The child is then placed under observation to see how he responds to food and other symptoms are also observed. The baby and the mother are then scheduled for regular visits and check-ups.
Is breastfeeding best for the baby?
The mother's milk is best nutrition for the baby because it is considered a complete and balanced nutrition which provides immunization of the baby in addition to being an integrated diet which makes it better than baby formula milk. Besides, the emotional factor between mother and child while breastfeeding is also better for the baby and fulfills tenderness. Baby formula can be used along with breastfeeding if the mother’s breast milk is insufficient. Therefore, in the first few months, the babies should consume mother’s milk to strengthen their immunity.
What causes baby skin yellowing and what is the treatment?
Baby skin yellowing or jaundice is the pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes in yellow due to the increase in bilirubin caused by normal destruction of erythrocytes and insufficient liver maturity. It is called physiological jaundice which usually starts giving the baby a yellow skin colour on the second day and gradually increases within ten days. It then begins to gradually decline over the following weeks and heals automatically.
Babies who breastfeed from their mothers continue with jaundice for a longer period due to a substance in the breast milk that increases the return of the absorption of bilirubin and this is called breast milk jaundice, it also heals automatically.
However, if there is a high increase in bilirubin and it exceeds the normal limit, it must be medically examined and treated.
What causes constipation and diarrhea for babies?
Excretion is different from a baby to another as there are babies who excrete twice or three times a day while there are babies who might do it once only. This is normal due to the baby’s weight, so if the baby who started to excrete more than his usual rate, then it is a beginning of diarrhea and must be followed up. The type of food a baby consumes also controls the nature of his excretion, so babies who consume vegetables and fruits are different from babies who mainly depend on foods full of starches and sugars. Lack of fluids can also cause constipation.
Therefore, we recommend mothers to pay attention to their baby’s diet to avoid diarrhea and constipation and make sure they get enough fluids. There are also some medications such as antibiotics or others that can cause constipation or diarrhea in the child. Medication is required if the baby doesn’t respond to the traditional treatment of constipation and can use anal suppresses as it works to ease excretion. Children who attend pre-school or nurseries may sometimes feel too shy to go to the toilet which can also cause constipation too.
What causes hernia for babies?
The hernia occurs as a result of genetic factors where the connective tissue is damaged by the hernia.
There are two types of hernias among children, umbilical hernia is very a common and usually decline automatically within 2_3 years and there is a hernia. Some cases require surgical intervention.
What causes meningococcal disease in children?
Meningitis is a winter disease which is a viral disease whose symptoms vary according to the severity of the infection and the immunity of the child when he or she is infected. If the child's immunity is weak, the infection is severe. Meningitis can affect any part of the neural system, leading to serious problems in the child, such as a hearing or movement ache. It can also be healed without sequelae, depending on the child's condition and the severity of the injury.
There is also a meningitis vaccine available in Qatar.
How many pediatrics clinic are there in the new North Hospital?
We have 2 pediatrics clinics in the North Hospital and we have received about 50 patients since the opening till today which is a good number meaning that we meet the demands of this region.
