The engineering and construction sector is playing a crucial role in the relations between Australia and Qatar, said Australian Ambassador to Qatar HE Jonathan Muir.

"Australian companies have designed and built many of Qatar’s iconic buildings and structures,” the ambassador noted while speaking at Engineers Australia Qatar Chapter’s (EAQC) seventh anniversary celebrations and gala dinner held at the InterContinental Beach and Spa, West Bay, Doha.

The evening commenced with a video recorded message from Dr Nick Fleming, National President of Engineers Australia, and Romilly Madew, CEO of Engineers Australia, in which they congratulated EAQC for their 7th anniversary and commended their dedication and commitment in promoting the engineering profession in Qatar.

Tamer Naguib, president of EAQC, in his presidential address apprised the attendees of the Chapter’s development since its establishment in 2015 and presented the Chapter’s activities over the past year. With the theme of the event being "Engineering; Making Life Happen”, he emphasized the role of engineering in advancing societies and communities to make the world a better place.

During his address, Naguib congratulated EA members who attained their Chartered status in 2022 and highlighted the Mutual Recognition Agreement between Engineers Australia Qatar Chapter and Ministry of Municipality, where Engineers Australia’s Chartered status is officially recognised by the Ministry, meaning that any Chartered member of Engineers Australia applying to be a registered engineer in Qatar is exempted from the Ministry’s assessment exam administered by the Committee for Accreditation of Engineers and Consultancy Offices.

Among the guest speakers were Ziad Yehya, Corporate Planning and Enterprise Risk Manager of Qatargas;Nasser Al Maslamani, Group HR Director of Baladna; and Dr Aynabat Atayeva, Head of United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism.

The audience was also addressed via video recorded messages by Nicole Manison, Deputy Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Australia; and Mark McGowan, Premier of Western Australia.

The event was sponsored by the Government of Western Australia represented by Aziz Saba, Medgulf represented by Chakib Nayfe, ECG represented by Omar Bahgat, and CCC represented by Ibrahim Al Khatib, where each sponsor delivered a presentation during the evening.

The highlight of the evening was the keynote address by Prof Dr Saud Abdul Ghani from Qatar University, also known as Dr Cool, who is the brain behind outdoor air-conditioning of FIFA stadiums.

During the event, HE Jonathan Muir presented Eng. Mohamed Abdelrahman, Eng. Irfan Ashraf, Eng. Surya Konduri, Eng. Haitham Al Dali and Eng. Sarath Divakaran with recognition certificates for attaining their Chartered credentials.

The evening was conducted by Master of Ceremony Chelsea Bosenberg, supported by Alessandra Falco and Rocheland Copeland, and concluded by a vote of thanks from Mohamed Abdelrahman, Secretary of Engineers Australia Qatar Chapter.
