Mowasalat on Thursday added 150 brand-new buses to its existing fleet of 2,150 Karwa schoolbuses to meet growing demand from Independent Schools under the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar.
The new buses were added to the fleet in the presence of Minister of Transport & Communications HE Jassim bin Saif al Sulaiti at the Mowasalat headquarters in Doha.
The new buses will serve Independent Schools from the current 2016-2017 academic year.
Manufactured in China, the new buses are painted in beige with orange lining to give them a distinct schoolbus look.
They will also display special stickers, which will help motorists to recognise them as schoolbuses and keep themselves alert. The buses are equipped with stop signs that alert other vehicles when dropping off students.
These buses are available in various capacities of 26, 35, and 40 seats. Fifteen of the new buses are equipped for students with special needs.
Making the new buses unique are advanced features like CCTV cameras inside for the driver to monitor kids, as well as seat belts, emergency exits, first-aid kits, and reverse-view cameras and sensors. Besides emergency exits on both sides, the buses have roof-top emergency exits as well.
The ignition switch of the bus will not work when the doors are open, which increases safety.
There are also warning lamps to indicate the doors are open. Automatic fire extinguisher system in the engine compartment and automatic engine fire suppression system make the new buses safer than the normal schoolbuses.
To ensure a comfortable journey, the buses are fitted with proper-sized seats, high quality ACs, LCD screens for display of educational materials and water dispenser.
Mowasalat Chairman Nasser bin Mohammed al Malki said special instructions were given to the manufacturers to ensure that these buses adhere to the highest international safety and security standards for transportation of schoolchildren.
Citing Independent schools as valued customers of Karwa buses, Mowasalat Managing Director Khalid Nasser al Hail said that the almost 10 years of strong partnership has resulted in Mowasalat operating 2,300 school buses for them.
"On an average, Karwa school buses make around 4,000 trips to transport 56,000 schoolkids per day," he said.
Hail said that Mowasalat is all prepared to meet any demand for school buses from the ministry in view of opening of new independent schools each year.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the event, Mowasalat Government Relations Manager Khalid Hassan Kafoud said if demand arises the transport company is ready to provide customised buses to private schools as well.
Mowasalat is open for business with both private and government entities, he said, adding that talks are on with some private schools to supply them with Karwa buses.
Kafoud also revealed that Mowasalt is planning to paint all the existing school buses in the same colour as the newly added buses.
