Lola, the 12-year-old girl whose body was found in a suitcase in Paris last week, was buried in Lillers in the north of the country on Monday, media reports said.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin was among several hundred mourners. The parents had called for a dignified burial “well away from political agitation,” the broadcaster BFMTV reported.
The girl’s body was discovered inside a suitcase on October in a courtyard in the north of Paris. There were visible wounds on the her neck. The case caused national outrage and was reported outside France as well.
Investigations centring on a woman are proceeding into allegations of the murder of a minor, rape and torture. The woman is being held in custody.
A suspected male accomplice is being investigated in connection with disposing of the body. He has been released under supervision.
The main accused is reported to be an Algerian woman who remained illegally in France following the expiry of her student visa.
Right-wing politicians have seized on the case to criticise the government’s migration policies. Right-wing groups held demonstrations in several cities over the weekend.
