The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’, represented by the Roads Projects Department (RPD), has won the Business Intelligence Group’s Sustainability Leadership Award as part of its 2022 Sustainability Awards programme.

Based in the United States, the Business Intelligence Group has honoured RPD’s Local Areas Infrastructure Programme in recognition of its perseverance in making sustainability an integral part of its business practice and overall mission and for leading the industry in these regards.

On this occasion, Eng. Saoud Al-Tamimi, Ashghal’s Roads Project Department Manager praised Ashghal’s efforts in supporting sustainable and environment-friendly construction practices.

He stressed that these efforts have gone beyond just supporting sustainability, and that Ashghal has incorporated environmental management in its strategic plan and has even mandated the implementation of green, sustainable, and recycling initiatives across its projects.

Eng. Saoud Al-Tamimi added: “Today the Local Areas Infrastructure Programme is being recognised for setting a good example in contributing to environmental protection and creating a balance between economic growth and environment preservation as well as sharing the knowledge and best practices both locally and regionally, which has resulted in winning several international awards by some of the most prestigious institutions in the sector, to which International Sustainability Leadership Award is added.”

“We are proud to reward and recognise the Public Works Authority for their sustainability efforts,” said Maria Jimenez, Chief Nominations Officer at the Business Intelligence Group. “It was clear to our judges that their vision and strategy will continue to deliver results toward a cleaner, more sustainable world.”

The Environment and Sustainability Monthly Report (ESMR) was implemented by Ashghal in 2019 as an innovative tool for accurately monitoring and reporting all construction material as well carbon impacts and reductions. It allowed carbon footprint measurement against the conventional approach, resulting in a total carbon emissions reduction for 2021.

Furthermore, Ashghal has established strategically located construction material recycling yards to optimise resource efficiency. This has allowed processing and recycling of construction waste materials such as excavation materials, demolition and concrete waste, reclaimed asphalt from road upgrades as well as water produced in the dewatering

process.

Ashghal implemented a Recycling and Sustainability Key Performance Indicator (KPI) across all its projects mandating that completed construction works must include at least 20% recycled material. Ashghal overachieved this KPI by 40.71% with 12,784,148 tonnes of recycled material in 2021.

The Business Intelligence Group was founded with the mission of recognising true talent and superior performance in the business world. Unlike other industry award programmes, business executives, those with experience and knowledge, judge the programmes. The organisation’s proprietary and unique scoring system selectively measures performance across multiple business domains and then rewards those organisations whose achievements stand above those of their peers.
