Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has advised Qatar residents to take safety precautions this week against dust storms which can pose health hazards such as sinus allergies and respiratory infections.
Qatar Meteorology Department has forecast strong winds and low visibility on Saturday because of the blowing dust.
HMC has recommended the following precautions during the dust storms:
* Avoid going outside, especially during high winds or when visibility levels are low. If unavoidable, spend as little time outside as possible, and avoid outdoor exercise. Keep doors and windows closed.
* When going out, cover nose and mouth with a mask or damp cloth which will reduce inhalation of dust particles.
* When driving, keep car windows closed. Opt for air-conditioning instead of fresh air.
* Avoid rubbing your eyes in order to prevent eye infection, which is common during a dust storm. Wear protective gear such as airtight goggles. If your eyes develop irritation, rinse with water. Be especially careful if you wear contact lenses.
* Those prone to bad allergies should start using antihistamines during the season, even before the symptoms start.
Those at high risk of contracting respiratory infections include infants and children, the elderly, people with a history of asthma, bronchitis, emphysema or other respiratory conditions, those with heart disease, pregnant women and people who have to work outdoors construction/ delivery workers.
Those with chronic conditions should visit their nearest emergency department and children taken to a paediatric emergency center as soon as possible if an infection occurs.
