Hyatt Plaza Chess Championship, which was held over two days, got a huge response with the Under-14 competitions seeing a participation of 140 men and women players in 7 rounds, while the second day’s competition for all ages saw 110 players in 9 rounds.
HE Sheikh Suhaim bin Khalid Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hyatt Plaza, marked the start of the event.
In the U-14 category, Qatari Rayan Irfan claimed the top place while Indian Albin Sagan was second place, and his compatriot Abel Sajjan third.
Mohamed Salah Al Malik won the best Qatari player award in the Under-12 category while Mohammed Saleh Al Qahtani won the Best U-10 award.
Khaled Al Jamaat won the award for the best Qatari player in the U-8 section in the girls’ category where India’s Shivabria Jareesh won the title.
Moza Al Khulaifi was the best in girls’ U-12, Haya Al Hussein in Under-10, and Asma Al Hammadi in U-8.
On the second day of the championship, Egyptian Mahmoud Badr won the title after a fierce and strong competition that extended until the last round garnering 8 points ahead of Argentinian Christian.
Youssef Muhammad Al Mutawa and Kholoud Al Khelaifi won the Best Qatari Player awards.
Mohammed Al Mudahka, President of Qatar Chess Association, Yousef Mohammed Al Mutawa, Secretary-General of the Federation, and Mohammed Al Hawamdeh, Head of Marketing at Hyatt Plaza, were among those present at the presentation ceremony.
For his part, Mohammed Al Madahka, President, QCA, praised the levels of competition seen at the championship.
