Japan’s national team coach Hajime Moriyasu named their 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu and Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma included.

There is no place, however, for Celtic duo Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate.

Furuhashi, 27, has scored eight goals in 10 Scottish Premiership matches for Celtic this season but will not add to the 16 Japan caps he has won since making his debut in 2019.

Among other long-time veterans, midfielder Genki Haraguchi and forward Yuya Osako, both of whom appeared at the previous World Cup in Russia, will not travel to the competition this time.

Osako also played in Brazil in 2014.

Meanwhile, Moriyasu will take seven Bundesliga players to the World Cup: Ritsu Doan (Freiburg), Daichi Kamada (Eintracht Frankfurt), Takuma Asano (Bochum), Wataru Endo and Hiroki Ito (both VfB Stuttgart), Ko Itakura (Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Maya Yoshida (34/Schalke 04).

Japan have been drawn in Group E at the World Cup and will take on Germany, Spain and Costa Rica. They will also face Canada in a friendly match on November 17, six days before their opening game against Germany.

Japan will also be the first squad to arrive in Qatar on November 7, ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 which begins November 20.

"Our goal is to reach at least the quarter-finals. This won’t be easy,” Moriyasu said.Japan’s World Cup squad
