There is no need to worry about the spread of coronavirus in schools in Qatar, a senior health official assured parents on Saturday as he said the schools would continue to operate in the country.
Dr Muhammad bin Hamad al Thani, the Director of the Public Health Department at the Ministry of Public Health, said Qatar was fully prepared to deal with any situation and has the best interest of children at heart.
Any decision related to coronavirus on schools will be taken in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, he said.
Global trends, Dr Muhammed said, indicate that children below the age of 10 possess little risk from the virus.
“We have been monitoring coronavirus infections in children around the world and so far we have not found any death of children below the age of 10. Also, there are a few recorded fatalities linked to coronavirus of people below the age of 20,” Dr Muhammad said in a press conference held in Doha on Saturday.
The general indicators in many countries are reassuring, the official said, adding that although some countries have recorded a large number of infections, they haven’t reported many deaths.
He said by providing immediate medical care to patients infected by the coronavirus can prevent fatalities.
Dr Muhammad urged the public not to pay attention to rumours of coronavirus infections in schools, hospitals or institutions in Qatar. He said the Ministry of Public Health will report every development of coronavirus in Qatar with complete transparency and openness.
“Don’t pay attention to any information (on coronavirus in Qatar) that does not come from the official website of the Ministry of Public Health.”
