The Qatar Chamber on Wednesday called on business owners in Qatar to deal leniently with rent defaulters, especially the small and medium-sized companies.
The suggestion, put forth by the Chamber’s board of directors at an emergency meeting held in Doha on Wednesday, comes at a time when commercial establishments brace for a dip in business following the implementation of measures to contain the spread of coronavirus in Qatar.
Establishments including schools, universities and retail stores in malls have been closed and certain localities have been locked down after the government announced a series of curbs to limit the outbreak, including an exhortation to the public to practice social distancing.
Waive or postpone payment of rents and dues until the crisis ends, the Chamber urged business owners.
At the meeting chaired by QC Chairman HE Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al Thani, the board has also made three other major decisions.
It has decided to form an emergency committee to follow up on all economic development resulting from the measures linked to coronavirus. This committee will also serve as a focal point between companies and government agencies.
The board has also decided to be in permanent session until the crisis ends and in constant contact with the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management to provide all possible assistance to the fight against coronavirus.
The Chamber said it would ensure that the private sector played a complementary role in implementing the measures taken by the government to confront the economic crisis resulting from the outbreak.
The QC Board of Directors also stressed the need to coordinate actions of all parties concerned to ensure the availability of food and food products in the markets in a smooth and continuous manner.
The Chamber also appreciated the initiatives taken by businessmen voluntarily to help the coronavirus mitigation efforts.
To facilitate the day-to-day operations and address inquiries from various stakeholders, the Chamber has dedicated four hotlines — 4455 9122 for merchants and businessmen, 4455 9187 for committees, 4455 5803 for media, 4455 9118 for member’s affairs, certificates of origin and certifications.
