Qatar is making efforts to build green stadiums for the 2022 World Cup, FIFA Sustainability Head Federico Addiechi said on Monday.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the Green Expo Forum 2016, Addiechi said that Qatar has made in-depth planning to adopt Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) green building norms that fulfil FIFA requirement for green certification of stadiums.
GSAS is the first performance-based system in the MENA region, developed for rating the green buildings and infrastructure. The primary objective of GSAS is to create a sustainable built environment, considering the specific needs and context of the region.
Addiechi said,"It is remarkable that Qatar is following green building norms seven years before the actual tournament. Such a long-term planning is one of the most important factors in ensuring that a major sporting event is organised in a sustainable manner."
"FIFA believes we all have a responsibility to protect, cherish and limit our impact on the environment. As an international organisation, we take this responsibility seriously and seek to set a good example to others in the world of sports and beyond, placing sustainability at the heart of everything we do," he added.
Earlier, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) Secretary-General Hassan al Thawadi reiterated his commitment to delivering stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar which are built with sustainability standards to leave a lasting environmental legacy.
Highlighting the importance of delivering a sustainable tournament in line with Qatar's national development plans, Thawadi said,"Sustainable environmental development is one of the pillars to build a better future for the coming generations as stated in the Qatar National Vision 2030. To achieve this, we must be sustainable beyond the borders of our plans and turn them into a vision and daily behaviour that we aim to apply in all areas, in order to leave a lasting legacy for future generations."
"We would like to sincerely thank the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development for leading the way with the development of GSAS, which is an important milestone on the path towards hosting a sustainable FIFA World Cup and provides a model for other countries to follow," he added.
