Kenya’s ambassador has thanked Qatar for supporting his nation and its community in Qatar amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Kenyan community in Qatar has been one of the beneficiaries of the support extended by organisations such as Qatar Charity and ministries including the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Interior.
Through the Kenyan embassy, numerous community members hard-hit by the pandemic have received food supplies and vouchers.
Recently, 500 vouchers that can be exchanged at Al Meera supermarkets for food items were distributed among struggling Kenyans in Qatar.
Besides, Qatar donated medical equipment worth $250,000 to Kenya to help its fight against COVID-19. The equipment was delivered through the Qatar embassy in Nairobi.
“I am grateful for the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for always remembering us,” Kenyan Ambassador to Qatar HE Paddy C Ahenda said.
“Besides remembering Kenyan expatriates during Eid holidays, Qatar has remembered us during COVID-19 pandemic especially when many Kenyans were laid off from work. The Kenyans were laid off not because they were not working well but because of the difficulties associated with the pandemic worldwide,” he added.
According to him, the Kenyan community in Qatar received 13,000 tonnes of food materials during the pandemic excluding the vouchers.
“Because of Qatar’s generosity, Kenyans didn’t go hungry,” the Ambassador said.
The Ambassador said the 500 food vouchers handed over by Qatar to the embassy has already been distributed among those who needed them within the community.
In early April, Qatar Charity delivered a consignment of food items to feed more than 500 Kenyan households in Qatar in view of the COVID-19 crisis.
