A two-level underground parking lot at Souq Waqif opened to the public on Thursday.
The opening of Souq Waqif western parking facility has come as a huge relief for visitors as it provides excellent services by facilitating easy movement of vehicles.
Engineer Faisal Abdullah al Dosari, Head of the Special Projects Department of the Private Engineering Office, said the parking lot has 650 spaces spread over two levels for vehicles, including dedicated areas for the elderly and people with special needs. The facility can accommodate 2,000 cars a day. CCTV cameras are installed at the entrances and exits.
The upper arena of the facility which boasts of many security and safety measures has also opened to the public.
Spread over 24,000 square metres, the area is allocated for holding celebrations and festivals.
In addition to the parking, Dosari said, a five-screen cinema complex is also being built on the site. Each theatre will accommodate 50-100 movie-goers. The cinema complex is expected to open in the third quarter of 2017.
Dosari said the project also includes 38 refrigerated and dry storage warehouses. These warehouses have already been built.
He said the opening of the parking lot will eliminate the problem of traffic in the area.
Walid Jamaan al Khamis, director of Al Rayyan Car Parking Management, said 12 payment machines have been installed. Payments for parking can be made by cash or by card in one of the machines around the new parking lot.
