Indonesia has seen an increase in Qatari investments in different sectors while Indonesian professionals are contributing to the developmental project in Qatar, said Indonesian Ambassador to Qatar HE Muhammad Basri Sidehabi.
The envoy made the remarks at a diplomatic reception hosted by Indonesian Embassy in Doha on Thursday to commemorate the 71st anniversary of Indonesian Independence and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Indonesia-Qatar diplomatic ties.
He said,"We gather here not only to celebrate the 71st anniversary of Indonesian Independence, but also the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Indonesia-Qatar diplomatic ties. Coincidentally, today is also celebrated in Indonesia as the Heroes Day, in remembrance of the 1945 Battle of Surabaya as part of our National Revolution. Forty-years ago statesmen from Indonesia and Qatar made the strategic decision to establish diplomatic relations.
"Over four decades, Indonesia-Qatar relations have achieved significant development and gained maturity. As Qatar has increased its presence in Indonesia through investments in telecommunication, energy, retail and banking sectors, Indonesia also has played a role in the rise of Qatar."
He added,"To date, there are approximately 8,000 Indonesians working as professionals in companies such as Qatar Petroleum, Qapco, Qafco, Rasgas, Ooredoo, Qatargas, Qatar Airways. I am delighted to learn that Qatar Airways is operating 21 flights per week to Jakarta as well as 14 flights per week to Denpasar Bali, making Qatar as a hub and gateway to experience wonderful Indonesia for people throughout the world."
Sidehabi also underscored the high-profile exchange of visits between the two countries. He expressed his appreciation to the leadership of Qatar and Qatari officials present at the event.
The envoy highlighted the milestones of his country since attaining independence in 1945 and until the leadership of current Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
"Since the very beginning of its independence, Indonesia has spared no efforts in its endeavour to contribute to the maintenance of national, regional and global peace and security. Indonesia wants to contribute more. Indonesia boasts a number of titles such as the world's fourth most populous nation, the third largest democracy, the largest archipelago and a country with the largest moderate Muslim population.
"We are a country where democracy, Islam, modernity and women empowerment go hand-in-hand. Besides, Indonesia is always at the forefront of the promotion of democracy, tolerance, pluralism and peace. Now under the leadership of President Joko Widodo, we are consolidating our position as a global maritime fulcrum between the Pacific and Indian Ocean. Indonesia has emerged as a stable economic entity built upon a robust foundation of democracy," he said.
Sidehabi also stressed Indonesia's active participation in the UN, ASEAN and G20 as well as the country's launch of candidature to the non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for the period 2019 to 2020.
