Short supply of metal cylinders has forced a large number of residents in Qatar to shift to Shafaf gas cylinders in the last couple of weeks.
Enquiries with Qatar Fuel (Woqod) have revealed that as many as 70 percent of residents in Qatar have already shifted to Shafaf gas cylinders.
"There is an acute shortage of metal cylinders these days. The gas refilling plant in the Industrial Area has almost stopped refilling metal cylinders. They are now mainly refilling Shafaf cylinders. We have not got any refilled metal cylinder from the plant for the last two days. Now, we have no option but to ask our customers to shift to Shafaf cylinders which are easily available," a retailer, dealing in metal and Shafaf gas cylinders in Al Mansoura area, told Qatar Tribune.
There is a sudden increase in the number of customers shifting from metal cylinders to Shafaf cylinders, the retailer said, adding that he comes across at least 10 people everyday who shift to Shafaf.
A Woqod official said the company has launched several initiatives to encourage all residents to shift to Shafaf cylinders by the end of this year.
To achieve this target, the official said, Woqod has extended its popular exchange offer till December 31 this year.
The sole supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the country, Woqod is offering QR100 discount to people who exchange the metal cylinder with a Shafaf cylinder.
"Under the exchange offer, a customer is charged only QR265 instead of QR365 which is the normal price of a gas-filled Shafaf cylinder. Anyone can go to a Sidra store or supermarkets that are licensed to sell Shafaf cylinder and get their cylinders exchanged," the official said.
