FIFA World Cup winner Xavi Hernandez has praised the ‘spectacular’ atmosphere at Qatar 2022 and is looking forward to a huge match tonight as Spain face Germany at Al Bayt Stadium (kick-off 10 PM).
The FC Barcelona coach, a FIFA World Cup winner with Spain in 2010, spoke to the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy today at the FIFA Fan Festival, where he was taking part in an activity organised by the Generation Amazing Foundation – a Qatar 2022 legacy programme – where he met with youth advocates involved in the documentary series Chasing Dreams.
“The atmosphere here is spectacular,” said Xavi, a former player and coach with Qatari side Al Sadd. “We are seeing it here in the fan zone, in the streets, there are many fans. It is a World Cup atmosphere. It is fantastic to be here and experience it first-hand, in a country where I lived for six years. The organisation is wonderful and we are all enjoying it.”
Xavi is full of anticipation for Spain’s match against Germany tonight at Al Bayt Stadium. Spain head into the encounter after beating Costa Rica 7-0, while Germany lost 2-1 to Japan in their opening match.
“It is a very even match,” said Xavi. “Germany need to win and Spain go into the game at a very good time. It’s going to be a great show. They will both want to get on the front foot. They both want the ball and to attack. It is a huge game.”
Speaking about Spain’s performance against Costa Rica, Xavi said: “All the players were at an extraordinary level – in defence and attack. I think it was the best performance of the World Cup so far. Luis Enrique is a very good coach. I think Spain will go far.”
As for the tournament generally, Xavi commented on the surprising results so far and which teams are likely to reach the final at Lusail Stadium on 18 December.
“Saudi Arabia’s result against Argentina surprised me even though I knew their level from my time here in Asia. It was a shame Qatar didn’t compete at the level they are capable of. I think we will continue to see surprises in the tournament,” said Xavi.
He continued: “It’s a hard tournament to predict. Brazil are doing well. Argentina have a chance if they can turn things around. Spain are doing well, France are very strong. It’s a very interesting World Cup.”
Qatar also believes the tournament will leave a lasting legacy for Qatar, the Middle East and Arab world.
“I’m pleased that Arab culture is becoming known to the world. People are seeing what Qatar is all about and creating great memories of the country. I believe this World Cup will leave a strong legacy for the country and region.”
