World-renowned scholar Dr Jose Rodriguez Perez has given the second talk in Texas A&M University at Qatar's (TAMUQ) 2016-2017 Distinguished Lecture Series in Education City.
In his talk, 'Keys to do good research', Rodriguez discussed tips on how to excel at research.
He said,"You don't need to be a genius and you do not need a lot of money." He emphasised the importance of building a good team that one can trust and are willing to empower through delegation."I hired you not to tell you what to do, but rather so that you can tell me what we should do," Rodriguez said."University students can do anything. Really!"
Other piece advice Rodriguez shared was on preparations for meetings and on ensuring that they start and end on time. He advised faculty to work for the benefit of the entire team and not for self-benefit or self-promotion. The research papers should be simple, clear and original.
The guidelines for good research presented by Rodriguez deserve notice because of his accomplishments. He has more than 41,000 citations. In 2014 Rodriguez was rated as the top-ranked researcher, out of more than 800,000 engineers, in all fields of engineering, according to Microsoft Academic.
Rodriguez closed by stressing the importance of a positive attitude and mentality. He said,"If you think you can, you can."
An electrical engineer, Rodriguez Perez is president of Universidad Andres Bello in Chile and a member of the Chilean Academy of Engineering.
