The American School of Doha (ASD) hosted its third annual Arabic Book Fair, which included a selection of books ranging from Pre-Kindergarten level through Grade XII. The event attracted parents and students, not only from different grade levels, but also those who learn Arabic as a second language.
The purpose of the event was not only to make Arabic books more accessible to students, but also to encourage students to read more in Arabic. The event allows students living in Qatar to get in touch with the culture they live in and gain a better understanding of the Arab world.
It is a highly anticipated event that requires two months of painstaking preparation and is planned by five members of the Arab Mothers Association (AMA) on the ASD campus.
The book fair consists of multiple tables filled with different types of books for students, including picture books, chapter books, comic books, and even books translated into Arabic from a different language.
The event also included a story time designated for elementary students in order to show them that stories in Arabic can be as interesting as stories in English. Students were very enthusiastic and there were many visitors during the fair, with all Arabic classes at ASD attending the book fair during school hours.
One of the distributors of the book fair stated, œIt is important for us to support Arabic literature not only for our Arabic-speaking students, but also for other students since we live in an Arab country. ?
œIt is very important to expose students to Arabic literature as much as English literature, and therefore, it was important to hold the event at school. The Arabic Book Fair has been successful in achieving its goal, as the event was a great success, ? a member of AMA said.
It is expected that this book fair will inspire other schools to hold similar events, in order to give students the opportunity to read more Arabic books. œReading is food for the brain, and it is important for us, as Arab mothers, to give our children books to read in Arabic. ? She hoped that their impact doesn't only stop at the American School of Doha, and encourages other communities to also support reading in Arabic. .
